Time Magazine has produced some of the most iconic articles, photos and covers in journalism. And one portrait artist contributed hundreds of covers to Time‘s legacy. The Portrait Gallery will be showcasing 300, including 26 originals, of Boris Chaliapin’s phenomenal portraits. Given the nickname “Mr. TIME” by his colleagues, Chaliapin became so prolific because of how quickly and accurately he could produce portraits. Spend some time visiting history through Mr. Time’s 28-year career chronicling it.

Over the years, Waverly Street Gallery has become one of the most respected and recognized galleries in the DC area, partly due to how much the gallery works with the community, including advertising local events, workshops and featuring local artists. Starting in May, the gallery will feature the “Fathom” exhibit by Liz Lescault and Alison Sigethy. It is a collection of glass and clay sculptures depicting familiar and imaginative life forms. On their first work together, these sculptures complete each other’s concepts, literally picking up where the other stopped, creating unique and other worldly art. Paired with a sound installation, this exhibit will immerse you in another world.

Some beautiful scenes have been written and filmed in gardens; marriage proposals and secret rendezvous for example. They can be a great source of beauty, quiet reflection and inspiration during the day. Photographers Diane Cook and Len Jenshel’s exhibit focuses on the mystifying nature of gardens at night, including amazing shots of breathtaking gardens in France. Not that long ago, science was limited and the human body was a giant, seemingly infinite puzzle. After decades of research and brilliant discoveries, the human body has become less of a mystery. This year is a milestone for two important discoveries, the 10-year anniversary of the Human Genome Project completion and the 16th anniversary of the discovery of the structure of DNA by Watson and Crick. The Natural History Museum will be celebrating these discoveries and the potential for more ground-breaking discoveries with a special exhibit.
